Monday, October 5, 2015 – Tacoma, WA – Come October 20th, 2015, The Brave New World Global Entertainment Company (BNW Global) will join forces with Pacific Lutheran University (PLU)’s Graduate Programs and Continuing Education department to present MIC: Music Industry Careers. MIC is a special event for students and the surrounding South Puget Sound community that will take place at the Karen Hille Phillips Performing Arts Center on Campus at 6:00pm.

The event will feature singer/songwriter, recording artist and founder of BNW Global, Shyan Selah who is including MIC as part of his national Café Noir Tour; as well as singer/songwriter and musician Paula Boggs, the former Vice President and Lead Counsel of Starbucks who emerged into the music industry after retiring in 2012.

“I’m excited to have Shyan and Paula come to PLU,” says Geoff Foy, Associate Provost for Graduate Programs and Continuing Education. “The event provides ourOscar Dresses students an opportunity to learn about the music industry from two people who are more than just performers.  Their community engagement intertwines beautifully with their passion and professional appreciation of music.  And their stories resonate with PLU’s mission.  The audience is in for a treat to hear them speak, as well as sing.”

The MIC event will also include a mixer for students and professional individuals in the local entertainment community in addition to concert performances by both Selah and Boggs. The two artists and entrepreneurs will also share their knowledge on the wide variety of careers in the music industry, the benefits of working in the industry with a higher education, and will answer questions about their individual unique journeys in the music business during an interview with musician and PLU Composition Lecturer, Jeff Leisawitz.

After decades as a top-level executive for corporate giants such as Dell Computers and Starbucks, Boggs decided to pursue a career in music and founded Boggs Media LLC. In 2013 she was appointed to President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Selah has had a long history of merging entertainment and education. His Café Noir Tour, which includes select Starbucks stores, live music venues, and college campuses across the country is a multi-media community outreach experience and will be released as a live music album this November 27th via distribution powerhouse INGrooves.  As part of bringing the Café Noir Tour to South Puget Sound, both Boggs and her band, The Paula Boggs Band, and Selah with his band, Shyan Selah & The Republic of Sound, will perform at The Swiss Restaurant and Pub (1904 Jefferson Ave, Tacoma) on October 15th, and Selah will perform at the Lakewood Center Starbucks on October 23rd and the College & Pacific Starbucks in Lacey, WA on October 24th.

“This is the core intention of the Café Noir Project, using music to bring an empowering message directly to the people,” says Shyan. “I am thankful for the opportunity to have music as my career but to do this at PLU, an institution so enriched in the culture and study of Music makes this truly an honor and I am excited to bring my soul on campus and let loose. In addition, sharing a stage with the multi-talented Paula Boggs will be an honor to say the least!”

“The Paula Boggs Band could not be more excited about playing at Tacoma’s The Swiss and on Pacific Lutheran University’s campus,” says Boggs. “Tacoma has a rich and distinct music scene and PLU is synonymous with great music.  It doesn’t get better than engaging with PLU’s talented students and sharing a stage with the always hip and wonderful Shyan Selah.”
